Prefix Worksheets

What are Prefixes?

We use prefixes to make a new work as these are the attachable letters. We fix them at the beginning of a word that meanings becomes different from the actual word. You can change the negativity, relation expressions, place, time, and manner by joining prefix with the original word. For example; Possible (base word) - Impossible (prefix) - opposite (meaning) | Payment - non-payment - opposite | War - pre-war - time | Terrestrial - extraterrestrial - place (outside of/ beyond) | Cook - overcook - manner (too much) | What are the most common prefixes? In English language, the most common prefixes that make words negative are in-, dis-, un-, etc. And another prefix that shows repetition is re- as if we add it to the word build, it becomes rebuild. It means to build something again. Many prefixes show position of an object or something. We use Sub that meaning are under or below and we can find it in the words subway and submarine. Don't change the base word's spelling while adding prefix to a word. The words disappear (dis- and appear), undo, and happy all relate this rule. If spelling results in double consonant, you will have to follow this rule. For example, the spellings like irredeemable, misspell, and cooperation. Use hyphen while joining a prefix to a proper noun as in pro-American. You will add the hyphen after fixing the prefix. The example of this is like Self-esteem, or ex-husband. The use of hyphens in writing will reduce the misreading, confusion, mispronunciations with other words. Hyphenate the words to evade confusion with the other word. For example, re-cover meaning is to cover again, and the meaning recover is to regain or repair. When you will apply the hyphen, the word will make sense.
