Multiple Meanings Worksheets

Words That Have Multiple Meanings

Words that have multiple meanings are termed as 'Homonyms.' They either have the same spellings and or the same sound. In case the homonyms have the same sound, they also fall into the category of homophones. When they have the same spelling, they are categorized as homographs. That being said, a homonym can be both a homograph and a homophone. Another category of homonyms is the heteronyms. These have the same spellings, but they sound different. The metal lead and a dog’s collar, lead, are homonyms but heteronyms. Similarly, a tear from the eyes and something ripping, tear, are heteronyms as well. The weapon, pike, and the fish, pike, are homonyms but not heteronyms.
